It’s PRIME season for the crooks to try and scam you online or swipe your packages.

Here are a few ways to prevent becoming a victim:
  • Make sure the site is who they say they are. Bookmark verified sites and make sure the site is secure. Check for a lock symbol in your browser to confirm the site’s safety. Avoid using links sent from emails or texts. Only buy gift cards from credible establishments, not resellers.
  • Be cautious with your cards. Shop online with credit cards NOT your bank/debit card. In the event something goes wrong, you won’t be without your cash flow while fraud is investigated. Decline saving card information on retailer sites.
  • Beware of fake texts and emails. Everyone seems to be texting us about a delivery problem — whether you shopped online or not. Somehow, they don’t have the right address. But they have your phone number? Really? Don’t click the links.
  • Keep computers and smartphones updated with the latest cybersecurity protections.
  • Do not shop on public Wi-Fi. Shopping from your device while on public Wi-Fi can open the door to hackers. If you must shop on public Wi-Fi, use a virtual public network (VPN), which creates a “tunnel” that allows you to transmit your encrypted data securely.
  • Stay a step ahead of the porch pirates. Take advantage of package tracking options. Provide specific delivery instructions and schedule deliveries to arrive when you will be there to grab them. Consider delivery locker options or having packages delivered to a trusted person who will be present to receive items.

Follow these simple steps to avoid having shopping happiness disrupted by theft or financial fraud. Happy deal hunting Culver City!
